Off to the woods

Today I am pissed off because someone is felling trees on a small pond on the route to my woodpath. The least people can do is go off the trails and ponds far enough so the fish are safe from sawdust in their gills when the snow melts. I WILL report this abuse if I am asked. There is a responsibility that we have to nature when we pick up a chainsaw, no matter what our background. It may be time for educating our children to the benefits of a healthy environment. Wildlife and Forestry, go into the schools. (note:reminder)

A quote from The Oregon History Project

"Sawdust dumped into streams became trapped in fish gills, slowly suffocating them, but eventually settled onto the stream floor, covering fish spawning habitat and killing off substantial portions of the food chain. Floating waste blocked sunlight, interrupting the photosynthesis needed by underwater plants to survive and continue to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, a condition made worse by the oxygen absorbing wood rotting away at all depths of the stream."

Some of the elders in Cartwright community talked about the effects of the Smallwood Reservoir flooding on coastal Labrador marine life from head waters to a point south. My last year fishing with any amount of fish was 1968. Next year "None". Does any one know the year the Height of Land Water came on stream as the known CF Project? Did it coincide with the disappearance of cod in 1969? Was there any study done or any records kept? Could it have been one of many reasons, or was it the sole reason? If there were studies done, are they available outside of NL Hydro Company's files?

Mel; Check the link at the end of this post. This data might be a little hard to absorb and I think Hydro may have some more. I am quite sure that they do have info on mercury and so on.
I believe Churchill Falls produced its first 'continuous' power in 1971 so one one assume that whole upper plateau was starting to be flooded before that, don't know for sure when though.

Guilty in the past of not considering possible harm through some of my own practices. I invite you iceman to let me know when I'm failing, and thank you for taking the initiative on exposing this practice. We need more like you.
